LaGuardia is the closest airport to most of New York City and the easiest one to mistime. There is no flat fare, no rail link, and a single parkway approach that decides how the whole journey goes.

What it costs
No flat fare applies. A yellow cab runs the meter the whole way.
From Midtown that is typically $45 to $70 before extras, plus the $0.50 improvement surcharge, the $2.50 congestion surcharge if the trip touches Manhattan below 96th Street, any tolls, and a tip. Call it $60 to $95 all-in.
Because nothing caps the meter, a bad run on the Grand Central Parkway is charged to you at $0.70 a minute. That is the argument for a fixed quote on this route — more so than at JFK, where the $70 flat fare already does the protecting.

Everything arrives via the Grand Central Parkway, and there is no useful alternative for the final few miles. It backs up around the airport exits, and worse on Mets game days when Citi Field traffic uses the same road.
The upside of that single approach is predictability. It is congested at known times, which means it can be planned for — we build the peak into the pickup time rather than discovering it en route.
The northern boroughs do well here. From Throgs Neck or Pelham Bay over the Whitestone, or from Harlem over the RFK, LGA is often quicker than it is from Midtown.

LaGuardia completed a full rebuild in 2022. If your last visit was to the old airport, it is unrecognisable.

No train, and what that means
LaGuardia has no direct rail connection — unusual for a major US airport, and a proposed AirTrain was cancelled in 2022, so it is not changing soon.
The public transport options are:
- M60 Select Bus — runs along 125th Street in Harlem and across the RFK Bridge to the terminals. Useful from Upper Manhattan.
- Q70 LaGuardia Link — a free shuttle from Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Avenue (E, F, M, R, 7) and Woodside–61st Street (7, LIRR).
Both work. Both mean a transfer with your bags, and the Q70 in particular fills up at peak. For one person travelling light they are perfectly reasonable. Otherwise the absence of a train is precisely why LGA generates so much car service work.
Short trips within Queens
Worth saying separately: LGA to Astoria is 10 to 15 minutes, to Flushing about the same, to Forest Hills 15 to 25.
On journeys that short, the taxi rank queue can be longer than the drive. At 6pm on a Friday that queue runs twenty minutes before you reach a car. A booked vehicle waiting at the kerb turns a 35-minute experience into a 15-minute one.
Departing from LaGuardia
Two hours before a domestic flight from the moment you reach the terminal. LGA is overwhelmingly domestic, so that is the usual figure.
From Midtown, leave around 4:15am for a 7am departure. From Harlem or the Bronx you can leave slightly later. Add 20 minutes for the weekday morning peak, and check whether the Mets are at home — Citi Field sits directly on the parkway approach.

Questions about LaGuardia transfers
Is there a flat fare from LaGuardia to Manhattan?
No. Unlike JFK, LaGuardia trips run on the ordinary meter with no cap. From Midtown expect roughly $45 to $70 in a yellow cab depending on traffic, plus the $0.50 improvement surcharge, the $2.50 congestion surcharge below 96th Street, any tolls, and a tip. Because there is no flat fare to protect you, a slow trip costs real money — which is why a fixed quote often works out better here than it does at JFK.
How long does it take from LaGuardia to Manhattan?
From Midtown, 25 to 45 minutes in normal conditions. Add 15 to 25 minutes during the weekday peaks. The Grand Central Parkway approach to the airport is the bottleneck and there is no realistic alternative route — you are on it either way. From Harlem it is often quicker than from Midtown, around 20 to 35 minutes over the RFK Bridge.
Which terminal do I need at LaGuardia?
Terminal B serves American, Southwest, United and others; Terminal C is Delta's; Terminal A, the old Marine Air Terminal, handles a small number of carriers. LaGuardia finished a complete rebuild in 2022, so if you have not flown from it in a few years it is an entirely different airport. Terminals B and C have separate roadways and are not walkable between — tell us the terminal when you book.
Is there a train to LaGuardia?
No direct rail link, which makes LGA unusual among major US airports. The options are the M60 Select Bus along 125th Street in Harlem, or the Q70 LaGuardia Link free shuttle from the Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Avenue and Woodside subway stations. Both work and both involve a transfer with luggage. A proposed AirTrain was cancelled in 2022, so this situation is not changing soon.
Why is LaGuardia closer than it looks from the Bronx?
Because the Whitestone Bridge drops you almost directly onto the Grand Central Parkway a few miles from the terminals. From Throgs Neck or Pelham Bay you can reach Terminal B in under 25 minutes off-peak, which beats most Manhattan addresses. Harlem is similarly well placed via the RFK Bridge. The airport's location is much better for the northern boroughs than for Midtown.
Do you do short LaGuardia-to-Queens trips?
Yes, and they are worth booking rather than queueing for. LGA to Astoria or Flushing is 10 to 15 minutes, and to Forest Hills 15 to 25. A booked car skips the taxi rank entirely, which at 6pm on a Friday can be twenty minutes before you reach a vehicle. On a fifteen-minute journey that queue is the majority of the trip.
