Taxi and car service in the Bronx

The Bronx is where the gap between "there are taxis in New York" and "there is a taxi where I am standing" is widest. Yellow cabs cluster in Manhattan. Green boro taxis help during the day and thin out at night. Meanwhile the borough runs on shift work, hospital appointments and early flights out of LaGuardia — trips where "probably" is not good enough.

Where we pick up

Anywhere in the borough. The addresses that come up most:

South Bronx — Mott Haven around East 138th and Alexander Avenue, Melrose near the Hub at East 149th and Third, Port Morris, and the Grand Concourse from 138th up through 161st.

Central Bronx — Fordham Road between Webster and the Grand Concourse, Belmont and Arthur Avenue, Tremont, Mount Hope, and the stretch of the Concourse around Poe Park.

Northwest — Riverdale along Riverdale Avenue and Johnson Avenue, Kingsbridge near West 231st and Broadway, Spuyten Duyvil, Fieldston and Van Cortlandt Village.

Northeast — Woodlawn around Katonah Avenue, Norwood, Williamsbridge, Baychester and Co-op City.

East — Throgs Neck along East Tremont Avenue, Country Club, Pelham Bay near Westchester Avenue, City Island, and Soundview and Castle Hill toward the water.

City Island deserves a specific mention: one road in, one road out, restaurants busy every summer weekend, and effectively zero street hails. Book the return leg when you book the outbound.

Connecting from transit

The Bronx has good rail links that stop short of where people actually need to be, which is most of our work.

Subway. The 4 runs up Jerome Avenue; the B and D run under the Grand Concourse; the 2 and 5 serve the east through White Plains Road; the 6 runs to Pelham Bay Park. The 1 covers Broadway up to 242nd Street and Van Cortlandt Park.

Metro-North. The Harlem line stops at Melrose, Tremont, Fordham, Botanical Garden, Williams Bridge and Woodlawn. The Hudson line runs through Riverdale, Spuyten Duyvil and Marble Hill — heavily used by Riverdale commuters, and the last-mile from those stations up the hill is a regular booking for us.

Express buses. The BxM routes into Midtown serve Riverdale, Co-op City and Throgs Neck, which tells you exactly which neighbourhoods the subway does not reach well.

We meet trains and buses. Give us the arrival time and the station, and the car is there when you come down the steps.

Trips we run most

Getting to the airports

LaGuardia is the Bronx's home airport in practical terms. From Throgs Neck or Pelham Bay you can be at Terminal B in under 25 minutes off-peak — quicker than most Manhattan addresses manage.

Newark is the one to plan carefully. It means the Cross Bronx Expressway and the George Washington Bridge, and both are unpredictable. For a morning flight out of EWR we will normally suggest leaving 30 minutes earlier than the arithmetic says.

Traffic, bridges and tolls

The Cross Bronx Expressway is the defining traffic fact of this borough. It is routinely among the most congested stretches of road in the United States, and it is unavoidable for anything heading west toward the George Washington Bridge. Between 3pm and 7pm on a weekday, treat every posted estimate as optimistic. Where the trip allows it, drivers use the Bruckner or local streets instead — slower on paper, faster in reality.

Whitestone versus Throgs Neck. Same toll, different destinations. Whitestone for LaGuardia and northern Queens; Throgs Neck for JFK, eastern Queens and Long Island. Both queue on Friday afternoons.

Harlem River crossings into Manhattan. The Willis Avenue, Third Avenue, Madison Avenue, 145th Street, Macombs Dam and University Heights bridges are all toll-free. The Robert F. Kennedy (Triborough) is tolled but faster to the Upper East Side and to Queens. For a short hop into Harlem there is no reason to pay a toll, and we will not route you over one without saying why.

Congestion pricing. Trips continuing into Manhattan below 60th Street now carry a congestion charge on top of the older taxi surcharge. It is included in the quote rather than added afterward. Trips that stop in Harlem or the Upper East Side are unaffected.

Yankee Stadium. Eighty-one home games plus concerts. On game days River Avenue, East 161st and the surrounding grid become impassable roughly 45 minutes before first pitch and for an hour afterward. Book ahead and we will set a pickup point clear of it.

Hospitals, venues and destinations

Hospitals — Montefiore (Moses and Weiler campuses), Jacobi, St. Barnabas, Lincoln, BronxCare, Calvary and Montefiore Westchester Square. Recurring appointment runs are some of our steadiest work; ask about a standing booking.

Universities — Fordham's Rose Hill campus, Lehman College, Manhattan College in Riverdale, Bronx Community College, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Move-in and move-out weekends need booking well ahead.

Venues and attractions — Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Zoo, the New York Botanical Garden, Orchard Beach, Wave Hill, City Island's restaurant strip, Arthur Avenue's Little Italy, and the Bronx Museum.

Transit interchanges — the Metro-North stations at Fordham and Riverdale, and the Bx bus terminals at Pelham Bay Park and West Farms.
